This project demonstrates extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable “Take Action” projects that address important community needs.
Laurel De Santis is a sophomore at Saugus High School and serves as an Associate Editor of the school’s yearbook, an honor student in the National Honor Society and is an active member of the girl’s golf team. As a Girl Scout member of Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Council for ten years Miss De Santis is a Girl Scout Senior in Troop 382 of Santa Clarita. Her Girl Scout mentor, Melissa Pepe and the staff at Villa Scalabrini in Sun Valley, CA supported her in her Gold Award Project effort. In addition, Mrs. Laura Mesrobian, Mr. Ardy Afshar from Villa Scalabrini aided her and she obtained donations from the Denzin Family, the Saramiento Family, Alan Kram Family, the Peters Family, and many others. Miss De Santis had a great amount of help from other Girl Scouts in her from Troop 382, 2942 and other volunteers. Her Gold Award project began in November 2019 and was completed in January 2020.
At Villa Scalabrini the need for an updated Library turned into the making of a Media Center for the residents. The former Library was 40 years old and in need of a face lift. The project included removing all the books, shelves, furnishings, and flooring. The applying new paint, installing new carpeting, cleaning and repairing the shelving, re-installing the shelving and re-stocking the books. In addition, a new section for over 600 DVD’s, 300 CD’s and 100 cassette tapes were added to provide entertainment as well as information to the residents. A computer was added so that residents may have access to the Internet and email.
Laurel is interested in becoming a medical doctor upon graduation from Saugus High School.
This project marks the completion of her Gold Award Project, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. It also represents Laurel’s time, leadership, creativity and effort contributed to making the world a better place.
An open house was held February 8, 2020 at Villa Scalabrini, located at 10631Vinedale Street, Sun Valley, CA 91352.
