Quail Run Ostrich Ranch Opens after Hiatus

| Community | February 20, 2020

Quail Run Ostrich Ranch in Lake Hughes is officially open for tours again, in addition to selling eggs and birds.

“It’s been a long, hard year being under the vNC quarantine that was instituted county wide last year,” according to Quail Run. “Especially because (the ranch) never had a case of this disease in the area or their ranch, and because ostrich aren’t your typical birds (they don’t get sick).”

After the quarantine was extended again, the ranch quickly began operations. With some help from Spectrum News reporter Natalie Brunell’s report that alerted her viewers to their plight, as well as the advocacy of Assemblyman Tom Lackey and the persistent support of Pamala Balch from his office who coordinated with reps from both Senator Wilk and Supervisor Barger’s offices, they were finally able to communicate the unnecessarily dire state of the situation to the state veterinarians of the CDFA.

Quail Run had a meeting with Dr. Haack and Dr. Fowler of the CDFA, as well as reps from Assemblyman Lackey and Senator Wilk’s offices, where they were able to address why their typical permitting process for large-scale egg and bird operations just wouldn’t address that type of business – a small, family-run ranch with an event site, developing U-Pick orchard, and educational agritours that help sell produce, ostrich eggs and chicks individually on the fly.

Once the officials visited to finally test birds and facilities, it took under 48 hours for them to finalize issuing a permit for the ranch to get back in business. Quail Run Wishes to thank Assemblyman Lackey, Pamala and her team; Spectrum News, Natalie & her viewers; Senator Wilk and Supervisor Barger’s offices and reps, and the many folks who put in calls, emails, spread the word, and donated to support saving the ranch. They would also thank Dr. Alexi Haack for working so quickly and Dr. Kent Fowler for continuing to reach out to ensure they get what they need to comply with the permitting.

The public is welcome to schedule a visit by phone at (661)724-1592 or by visiting their website at quailostrichranch.com. Quail Run Ostrich Ranch is located at 44420 Shaffer Rd in Lake Hughes, 93532.

  1. Ah yes, the CDFA Gestapo run by Herr Commandant Dr. Annette Jones. Funny how none of her husband’s chickens were quarantined. Really think the CDFA needs looking into.
