A group of senior men between the age of 50 and 90-plus play monthly golf tournaments together in an informal, friendly atmosphere. Other men from the community are invited to join the Vista Valencia Senior Men’s Golf Club to play in 12 local tournaments, as well as travel to several others at such courses as Elkins Ranch, Knollwood, Mountain View, Simi Hills and Rancho Vista.
The local tournaments are held at Vista Valencia on the third Thursday of each month, with a cost of $40, which includes green fees, golf carts, range balls, lunch and prize money. There are eight closest-to-the-pin awards per tournament, plus an optional $5 fee for “Super Seniors,” aged 75 or older, for closest-to-the-pin awards on six additional holes.
There is a tournament director and an away tournament director to handle the administrative duties of the club. Tournaments are set up in flights according to individual handicaps, so every team can be competitive, whether a player’s handicap is 3 or 33. The tournament director tries to accommodate requests to team you up with specific people and/or handicaps.
To qualify, golfers need to establish a Southern California Golf Association handicap at least 10 days prior to the event. Those playing without handicaps will be placed in the “A” flight. The deadline for cancellation with a refund is one week prior to tournaments at Vista, 10 days prior for away tournaments.
In the event a player can’t complete a round for health or emergency reasons, he will be eligible for prizes earned up to the point he withdrew. Some special circumstances will be considered by the board.
Players are asked to exchange scorecards with their playing companions, and all completed scorecards must be signed by the player and the scorer. You are responsible for the correct score on every hole. If there is a difference between the total of the holes and the total written on the card, the total of the holes will be the official score.
You can view the Senior Men’s Golf Club’s newsletter at vvsmgc.com, as well as the “Seniors” bulletin board at Vista Valencia. It contains articles from each of the board members’ areas of responsibility, as well as tournament results and winners, future tournament entry forms, and schedules.
There is an annual 36-hole Club Championship Tournament to determine three flight champions and the overall club champion. The winners carry the honor of champion for the year. The entry fee is $10, and to qualify you must have played in three tournaments in the current year. More information is available upon request.
Members enjoy playing in an organized club, says club president Paul Long, and they always welcome new members.
“We are the only public Senior Men’s Golf Club in the Santa Clarita area and are a non-profit organization,” Long says. “Senior men are encouraged to join our group of older duffers who really love the game of golf.”
