Open & Honest:
As I was trying to jump-start this week’s rant I found myself being concerned with backlash from the local lefties who up until a few days before this writing were still emailing Gazette advertisers trying to intimidate them to pull their ad dollars from this “racist paper.” Thank God and goodness we have only lost one advertiser who caved to the nonsensical rhetoric that inundated most of them.
During the several years I’ve been filling this space with my thoughts; many a nasty criticism has come my way. I can honestly say most of it hasn’t bothered me (one instance it did was when a nice elderly lady wrote to me that my language was too coarse at times) as I chalked it up to, “comes with the territory.” But, I have to tell you when the possibility of losing ad revenue is thrown in my face; it is cause for concern as this business is 99% dependent on ad dollars. It’s just not my family’s income I’m concerned with, it’s also the folks working for us who depend on it, too (not to mention other numerous overhead expenses).
So what am I to do? Cower behind this keyboard in fear of more harassment being heaped on our advertisers, or do I just say “screw it” and rant like I’ve been doing since before my hair turned gray?
I want to write about what’s so wrong with thinking America is great, and recognizing that we are the greatest nation on earth? Sure, our nation has faults and is far from perfect, but we’re always the first to offer aid after international disasters and people from around the world would choose to live here.
I’ll tell you why that is, it’s American exceptionalism and why that phrase is deemed horrific by the left I’ll never know. What’s their deal — they don’t want America to be the great nation it is, or is it they can’t see past their poop-colored glasses when trying to determine what makes a country great?
American exceptionalism doesn’t equate to being an evil empire, unless someone already has a skewed, mixed up view of America to begin with. It doesn’t mean we’re better people than other folks in the world, it means we live in a country that was founded on solid, core beliefs that carry on to this day. Those foundations are what should cause us to love, respect and stand up for America, not rip and ridicule it as nation of people who should be ashamed of their race.
The majority of Americans, including myself, my loved ones, acquaintances and friends want all Americans to be great and prosper no matter their race, religion, sexual identity or political ideals. That’s truly what American exceptionalism is!
Sometimes I get concerned about my intelligence level (don’t laugh). Sometimes I can’t help but wonder, as hard as I try, why I don’t see what some of our friends on the left do. They are so convinced their view is just common sense for all to see. It’s like when I took algebra in high school, no matter how much I focused and concentrated on how to solve the equation it just wouldn’t come to me, even when the teacher said, “It was common sense” (yikes, painful memories).
Anyway, when I hear the new mayor of Chicago blame Republicans for the large number of shootings there were over the Labor Day weekend, and she says it like we’re all stupid for not seeing that, I get puzzled.
When I heard about a liberal columnist back East who ripped apart a candidate running for a local office as being a white nationalist because he is a pro-life conservative, and those type of people oppose abortion not because they believe every human life is sacred, but because they fear that abortion will accelerate the demographic “replacement” of white people by nonwhite immigrants. She is really serious about this, and it makes me scratch my head.
When I read about a movement for a Straight Pride event in Modesto and one of the protesters exclaimed, “That’s not what this is. This is white supremacy being wrapped up in a package of straight pride and people are just taking the package and taking the white supremacy that comes with it,” I felt like I was back in algebra class, trying to figure out how the two equate to each other.
When Christy Smith called for a boycott of the Gazette….Oh never mind. On second thought more incomprehension just clouded my brain. If Christy and her fellow Gazette detractors were true liberals how could they use a term like boycott, why you ask? Come on it’s common sense, boycott is not a gender neutral term. I can’t believe they used a term that is so derogatory to the male gender, it makes no sense!
Ranter’s Note: I’ve been asked over the last few weeks what the Gazette boycotters are emailing to our advertisers. Here are a couple of examples.
I am writing to you as I was left rather shaken seeing signs of racism in a recent piece written in the Gazette. Since you advertise there, I am letting you know that I will limit my shopping to places that do not advertise in this racist paper. I am not going to write to you letting you know what racism is, as I assume you know.
I ask that you take your ads elsewhere. Thank you.
I’m writing because I recently picked up a copy of the Santa Clarita Gazette and was horrified to see the publisher, Doug Sutton, “rant” about how white supremacy is a hoax and complaining that concerns about racism are actually attacks on whites., but he is essentially echoing dangerous talking points from the likes of Fox News’ Tucker Carlson and the KKK’s David Duke.
This hateful rhetoric has no place in a diverse community like Santa Clarita and it saddens me that this publication is freely available all throughout town. What’s worse is that the Santa Clarita Gazette is legitimized with advertisements from businesses like yours. Perhaps you didn’t realize Doug Sutton’s toxic viewpoints when purchasing ads for your business, but in light of his recent editorial column, I’m asking that you stop advertising in a publication that promotes hate, bigotry, racism, and outright lies. Thank you.
Ranter’s Note II: This is what I wrote to some of those who sent the emails.
While I appreciate your passion for what you believe, I don’t understand the need for you to try and tear down a business that employs decent, hard working folks, just because you disagree with an opinion piece I wrote. In fact the majority of the people we have heard from are quite puzzled as to how my column has been perceived as racist in any form or fashion.
With that being said you are more than welcome to submit your thoughts for publishing as to why what I wrote was racist, but I would ask you use exact quotes from the column when doing so.
If you’re not aware the Gazette strives for fair and balanced news/opinion, which is why we published the hate mail and other dissenting letters received regarding my column.
Look forward to hearing from you, Doug Sutton
Ranter’s Note III: I have not heard back from any of these folks.
Quotes, Quips and Headlines:
“So what I’m looking for is accountability and responsibility. What should the price be for somebody who lies to the FISA court to get a warrant against an American citizen? We need to hold those accountable who watch us when it comes to getting warrants against anybody regardless of the political party in question. Did they manipulate the FISA court? Did they manipulate the counter-intelligence rules against Papadopoulos? Did they let Clinton go because they have a political bias? Time will tell.” (Lindsey Graham)

Letters to the Ranter:
You’re just another bitter boomer that is more concerned about things being fair for them and the world revolving on them while choosing to be passive aggressive.
You’re such a joke. Shenelle
Ever since Trump’s election, the left was shocked into full blown Trump Derangement Syndrome and this derangement has only gotten worse as time goes on. The Dems have called Trump every name under the books and done everything they could to reverse the results of the 2016 election. First it was Russia, Russia, Russia and then Stormy, Stormy, Stormy. Then after 30 million dollars or so when neither of these two assaults worked out it was a new tact. It is now racism, racism, racism. Not only are they still calling Trump every name under the book, they are now calling all of his constituents all of those names too.
This is what Doug seemed to be reacting to in his August 16th “Rant.” He is tired of being called a white supremacist or racist, who wouldn’t b? Apparently the holyist of holy Christy Smith doesn’t like this freedom of speech thing in our constitution and cited two incidents of racism against her staff right here in Santa Clarita, what this had to do with Doug is hard to say but she indirectly was calling him a racist it would seem. She goes on to attempt a boycott of his publication and all of those who advertise in the gazette to do the same. I guess she doesn’t care that a lot of people would be put out of a job if her boycott was successful which it won’t be. This is mean, vindictive and cruel to say the least. She hides behind this facade of sweetness but behind that facade we see her true colors. It is my hope we can boycott this hypocrite in 2020 who ran on a platform of supporting small business, not. She owes Doug an apology. Phyllis
