An annual beer festival held this weekend is more expansive than ever. The Ventura Surf ‘n’ Suds Beer Festival, “The Beer Festival with a Surf Twist,” celebrates its fourth anniversary with the largest festival yet. Over 65 craft breweries, ciders and wineries will converge on Saturday, May 19 at San Buenaventura State Beach.
Presented by Trek Bikes of Ventura, Surf ‘n’ Suds is benefitting The Young and Brave Foundation, a Ventura County based non-profit dedicated to helping today’s youth beat cancer.
“Having The Young and Brave Foundation participate and supported by a local event like Surf ‘n’ Suds Beer Festival is incredible. It takes a village to beat this disease, we’re so thankful for all the love and support,” said Nathaniel Curran, co-founder of the foundation.
We will be debuting the new Ventura Surf ‘n’ Suds collaboration beer, Trés Cervezerias Marzen, brewed by Ventura Coast, Topa Topa Brewing and Poseidon, at Surf ‘n’ Suds. The Trés Cervezerias Marzen is the second part of the Surf ‘n’ Suds Tres Cervezerias beer collaborations.
Tres Cervecerías Märzen is a traditional style German lager with a west coast influence. The beer has a 6.3 percent ABV, while still maintaining a malt character and a light hoppy aroma, according to press material released by festival planners. Traditional German Pilsner and Munich malts create a light backbone for the delicate floral noble hops used throughout the boil and in the dry hop.
“We Chose a Marzen because of the tradition behind Marzen brewing in Germany, where the beer is brewed in March, with some of the beer being consumed fresh in the spring, and the rest being cellared until Oktoberfest in September,” said the Ventura Coast Brewing Co. head brewer. “I felt like this lined up perfect(ly) with the Surf ‘n’ Suds festivals being in May. It’s also just a super refreshing beer with enough kick to get you in the fest mood!”
Surf ‘n’ Suds is in its fourth year in Ventura and many say its popularity is the result of a beer explosion in the area.
“Ventura is a tight-knit community and so is the craft beer industry. When you have these two things collide, the outcome is electric,” said Casey Harris, head brewer and co-owner at Topa Topa Brewing Co.
Other breweries, ciders and wines participating include: 21st Amendment, Alpine, Anchor, Angel City, Anna’s Cider, Ballast Point, Belching Beaver, Big Sky, Captain Fatty’s, Concrete Jungle, Coronado, Enegren, Epic, Figueroa Mountain, Firestone Walker, Five Threads, Founders, 14 Cannons, Glutenberg, Golden Road, Green Flash, Guinness, Hard Frescos, High Water, Institution Ale, Island Brewing Co., JT Schmid’s, King Harbor, Kona, Ladyface Ale, Lagunitas, Libertine Pub, Lincoln Beer, Local Craft Beer, Lost Coast, M Special, Mikes, Naughty Oak, Nicaragua Craft Beer, Ojai Valley Brewery, Pizza Port, Pocock, Red Tandem, Rincon Brewery, Saint Archer, Sierra Nevada, SLO Brew, Solvang Brewing, Stone, Telegraph, The Dude’s Brewing, The Good Cider, Two Trees Restaurant, Westlake Brewing, White Claw, Wolf Creek, Barrelhouse 101, Bloody Cure, Lucky Dogg Winery, Ojai Beverage Company, Santa Barbeerians, Social Tap and more.
