On Saturday, April 6, Reyes Winery will hold its 7th annual Sierra Pelona Vintners Wine Festival, which will benefit the Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley. Last year, over 700 people from all over Southern California attended. This year, more than 1,000 guests are expected to attend.
This year’s event will feature local wineries, breweries, cider makers, and plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. There will be local artists, chefs, bakers, plus many artisans showing handmade crafts. One of the rules for our event is that everything is handmade locally, so our guests can meet the chef, winemaker, brew-master or artist.
The Zonta Club of the SCV is a 501c3 service organization that empowers both local and international women. The event will raise money for Zonta projects and scholarships such as:
“LifeForward” is a series of workshops that concentrate on topics useful to women of various ages and interests.
“Girls Robotics” is a STEM program for girls. For 11 years, Zonta has partnered with the Girls and Boys Club of the SCV to work with girls to build and program Lego Mindstorm robots.
“Zonta says NO” is a campaign to educate and raise awareness of domestic violence within our community. Every November, for “Sixteen Days of Advocacy,” seven red dresses are hung at different locations throughout the SCV. Each dress symbolizes a local woman whose life was lost to domestic violence.
Last year, the Zonta Club of Santa Clarita partnered with “Fostering Youth Independence,” a local organization that ensures every youth leaving the foster care system feels safe, connected and loved.
Zonta also gives out scholarships to girls and women within the community. On May 9 at the Annual Awards event, scholarships for the “Virginia Wrage Memorial Fund” will be presented, along with Community Grants. Zonta International scholarships that will be awarded locally are “Jane M Klausman” and “Young Women in Public Affairs.” On the International level, an “Amelia Earhart Fellowship” is given to PhD candidates in science. One of our members, Dr. Sharon Langenbeck – the current Zonta International President Elect – was awarded the Amelia Earhart Fellowship twice.
