A regional summit to focus on childhood cancers will be held in Santa Clarita and connect remotely to The White House. Vice President Joe Biden will be a part of the first Cancer Moonshot Summit on Wednesday, June 29, 2016. The Los Angeles regional part of the summit will be hosted by Janet Demeter of Agua Dulce and held at The Master’s College in Newhall. The community is invited to attend for free.
Aimed at inspiring conversations in communities across the United States, these summits will be the first time that individuals and organizations representing the entire cancer community and beyond – researchers, oncologists, care providers, philanthropists, data and tech experts, advocates, patients and survivors, officials and representatives – will all convene locally under the national charge to double the rate of progress toward a cure.
Santa Clarita is the location for the Regional Summit welcoming the greater Los Angeles area, and the event has no other organizational affiliation than The White House. It is supported by Demeter’s non-profit group, Jack’s Angels Foundation, a local charity concerned with awareness and research for pediatric brain tumors, the leading cause of death in children diagnosed with cancer.
“If anyone needed a Moonshot, it’s these kids with the deadliest cancers and their families,” says Demeter, who hopes for a good turn out from the childhood cancer community. “They’ve been expected to just accept that there is scarce research activity for their children, because their relatively small numbers render their lives insignificant to investors, when most oncologists agree that if we prioritized them we’d probably cure cancer. If you have strong ideas and feelings on your heart to share with the community and the president’s administration about moving forward to actually cure cancer, now’s your moment; come share with us!”
The Regional Summit in Santa Clarita begins at 9 a.m. on June 29 and ends at 1 p.m. at The Master’s College, 21726 Placerita Canyon Road in Santa Clarita. It includes a guest panel of speakers and approximately a half hour of live stream content from the vice president’s event in Washington DC. There will be breakout sessions and a conference call with Vice President Biden. Admission is free and seating is on a first-come, first served basis. For more information and to RSVP, visit the page “Cancer Moonshot Regional Summit—LA” on Facebook, or email/call Demeter at firstname.lastname@example.org, 661-977-3125. All guests will have the opportunity to participate and are encouraged to contribute to the discussion.
