In Loving Memory – Valerie Bernstein

| Obituaries | March 22, 2018

Valerie ‘Val’ Bernstein 1935-2018 Val Bernstein of Stevenson Ranch passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 5, 2018 at the age of 83. Born in Riverdale, New York on February 26, 1935, Val married Herb Bernstein in California in 1955. The couple moved back to New York so they could save money, and returned to California several years later to start a family and put down roots. Val remained in California for the rest of her life. She was a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.  She was a voracious reader and a prolific writer with an incredible vocabulary. In fact, she was competitive at Scrabble, with an almost undefeated record. Val received a teaching degree from California State University, Northridge at the age of 33. She went on to become a tireless advocate for both her own children and many special needs children, working in special education for the Los Angeles County School District for most of her professional career. Val loved traveling the world with her husband and experiencing other cultures. This included multiple home exchanges with families on various continents. She was both generous at heart and donated to many charities. She is survived by her husband, Herbert Bernstein; sons Donald Bernstein, Edward Bernstein (Marlene) and Robert Bernstein (Lisa); four grandchildren: Daniel, Joshua, Jeffrey and Miles Bernstein; and a brother, Allen Earnest. A private memorial will be held on April 7, 2018. Donations in Val’s memory can be made to Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF): https://www.icrfonline.org/donate
