Santa Clarita native and former Canyon Theatre Guild performer Marie Wise-Hawkins has recently gained national attention for her talent as a country music artist.
Set to headline at this weekend’s Concerts in the Park, Wise-Hawkins was recognized as one of the top five country artists in the United States at last year’s Country Showdown, the world’s largest country music talent competition. After winning the local and state competitions, she made it all the way to the finals in Nashville and was the last female artist remaining in the competition.
While she was in high school, Wise-Hawkins won the Colgate Country Showdown competitions in Ventura and Santa Ynez, and later received her bachelor’s degree in classical voice from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia.
The star of the 2011 Canyon Theatre Guild production of “Always … Patsy Cline,” Wise-Hawkins took home the “Goldie” and “Best Musical” awards for her portrayal of 1950s country superstar Patsy Cline.
Wise-Hawkins has performed at numerous local nonprofit events – including Relay for Life, Henry Mayo Hospital’s Hometown Jamboree and the Child & Family Center’s Taste of the Town – and is actively involved in Santa Clarita’s “Cowboy Poetry and Music in the Schools” program.
