Athletes of the Week

Tiffany Cross is 36 years old and has been competing in Special Olympics (SO) since high school. The first sport she tried was bocce ball, followed by swimming, tennis, bowling, floor hockey, volleyball and basketball.

“Everyone at Special Olympics is very helpful,” Tiffany said. “We are one big family.”

SO has helped Tiffany lose over 170 pounds. When she first started SO she could not run, but now she runs up and down the floor while playing basketball with her team, the Diva Sharks.

Aside from Special Olympics, Tiffany is writing a book, works in a local day program, and does office work with her friends.

Sam Heyrat has been involved with Special Olympics since 2002. He started in swimming and eventually moved on to bowling, snow boarding, flag football and basketball.


Sam feels happy when is with his friends and is comfortable trying any sport he is offered, because he knows he has the support of his coaches and teammates.

During the week, Sam works in a local day program. Sam aspires to be an actor and has been in involved in acting classes in the San Fernando Valley.
