The “Freeway Series” at Chavez Ravine lived up to the hype as the Angels were able to stave off a ninth inning comeback by the Dodgers to win 5-4 on Tuesday night.
The Angels handed the Dodgers the third straight loss to their rivals thanks to Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun. The pair of Angels’ sluggers each finished the contest with a home run and key defensive plays to keep the Dodgers from obtaining the win.
Trout delivered his home run blast in the fifth inning off of Kenta Maeda and threw Max Muncy out at home plate in the second inning to keep the Dodgers off the board.
Calhoun also delivered at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a leadoff home run in the seventh inning off of Yimi Garcia. But Calhoun’s biggest contribution of the night wasn’t his bat, it was his arm.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs and Cody Bellinger on second base, Dodgers Kike Hernandez sent a ball into right field, Calhoun got the ball and hurled a blazing throw to home plate. As Bellinger rounded third, it looked as if he would be called safe at home, but Calhoun’s throw made it in time to end the game with an Angels’ victory.
